…This genre originated in the 17th century at the royal court, and initially it was a solemn piece based on myths and heroic legends, but in the second half of the 18th century, pieces with folk and folksy themes appeared. Zarzuela was forgotten for a time due to the popularity of the tonadilla, a skit-like song theater with a strong folk and ethnic feel, and the influence of Italian opera, but in the mid-19th century it was revived by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri (1823-92) and several other talented composers. By the end of the century, many composers specialized in zarzuela, including Ruberto Chapí (1851-1909), had emerged, and the genre gained immense popularity, especially among the citizens of Madrid. …
