Rajin

Japanese:
Rajin

A port city in the eastern part of North Hamgyong Province, North Korea. It is the northernmost port in Korea, located in Rajin Bay, surrounded by mountains on three sides. The port is a natural harbor with Daecho Island and Socho Island narrowing the mouth of the bay and forming a breakwater. The nearby waters are rich in fishing grounds for cod, pollock, mackerel, etc., and it is a base for inshore fishing and a port of call on coastal shipping routes. Rajin was originally just a fishing village, but under Japanese colonial rule, it was built as the shortest route to the mainland. In 1932, it also became the terminus of the Kihoe Line, and became a port city with a population of over 300,000. As the final station on the Wonra Line, it is a key point for land and sea transportation, and is connected to Yugi by the Yura Tunnel (3,850 meters), the longest tunnel in the country. A railway line was opened between Rajin and Chongjin in 1965.
