Kurosegawa Tectonic Zone

Japanese: 黒瀬川構造帯 - くろせがわこうぞうたい

A large tectonic zone that stretches from Yuasa Town, Wakayama Prefecture, through Ochi Town, Kochi Prefecture, Shirokawa Town (formerly Kurosegawa Village), Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture, and near Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Japan's oldest strata, the Silurian-Devonian, as well as the even older Terano metamorphic rocks, Mitaki igneous rocks (mainly granite), and Paleozoic high-pressure metamorphic rocks are scattered throughout this tectonic zone, all of which are associated with serpentinite. The characteristics of the constituent rocks are different from those of the surrounding Chichibu belt, and it has been suggested that the zone is a klippe made of ancient rocks, or that it is a large-scale strike-slip fault zone.

和歌山県湯浅町から高知県越知町，愛媛県西予市城川町（旧黒瀬川村）などを通り，熊本県八代市付近に至る大構造帯。この構造帯には，日本最古の地層シルル〜デボン系，それよりさらに古い寺野変成岩，三滝火成岩（おもに花コウ岩），古生代の高圧型変成岩などが蛇紋岩にともなわれて点々と分布している。周辺の秩父帯の岩石とは構成岩石の特徴が異なり，古期岩石からなるクリッペとする説や大規模な横ずれ断層帯とする考えなどが提案されている。
