Luo Jin-gyoku

A Chinese scholar of historical research and epigraphy from the late Qing to the early Republic of China. His courtesy name was Shuyan and his pen name was Xuetang. He was from Shangyu County, Zhejiang Province. In the late Qing, he became an Examination Office counselor and supervisor of the Agricultural College of the University of Beijing. In 1911 (Meiji 44), when the Xinhai Revolution occurred, he fled to Japan and lived in Kyoto. He returned to China in 1919 (Taisho 8). He taught Emperor Xuantong (Puyi) for a time, but after the establishment of Manchukuo, he served as a councilor in the Councillors' Office and Chief of the Control Yuan. Well versed in classics and history, he was involved in the revision of classics and research into new materials such as oracle bones, bronze vessels, and wooden tablets. He was particularly interested in the artifacts excavated from the Yin Ruins, not just the oracle bones, but also the associated artifacts, and worked with his son-in-law Wang Guowei to elucidate the Yin culture. His main works include "Studies on the Yin Shangzhen Divination Characters," "Liusha Falling Slips," "Scribes from the Yin Ruins," and "Three Generations of Jin Wen Zheng Wen."
