Rashid Riḍā

Rashid Riḍā
1865‐1935
An Islamic thinker born in Al-Karmuni, Syria (now part of Lebanon). Passionate about restoring Islamic thought to the eastern countries, he became a disciple of Muhammad Abduh in Egypt. In 1897, with his teacher's help, he started publishing the magazine al-Manār in Cairo (until 1936, the final issue of which was published in 1940). He used the magazine as a base for propagating Islamic reform ideas from a strict orthodox and restorationist standpoint (the Islamic revival movement). He argued that the revival of Islam requires the combination of race, nation, faith, and action, and he proposed a program of action and a political philosophy for jihad, which had a major influence on the later Muslim Brotherhood movement.
