Romanian poet and novelist. Born into a poor peasant family. He worked as a poet and journalist until World War II, but after the war he became famous for his epic novel "Barefoot" (1948), which turned his own life experiences into art and features the young boy Darjeeling as the protagonist. This work, which blends a unique prose-like style with grandiose epic descriptions, has been translated into many languages around the world. He published the autobiographical works "Playing with Death" (1962) and "The Mad Forest" (1963), as well as "The Gypsy Tent" (1968), which depicts the tragedy of the Roma (formerly known as Gypsies) under the Nazi regime.
