Sumio Kawakami

Sumio Kawakami

Printmaker. Born in Yokohama. Graduated from Aoyama Gakuin Senior High School in 1916 (Taisho 5), he traveled the following year to Canada, Alaska, and America for over a year. Became an English teacher at Tochigi Prefectural Utsunomiya Junior High School in 1921, and started working as a woodblock artist around this time. Became a member of the Japan Creative Print Association in 1927 (Showa 2), and also exhibited at the Kokugakai exhibition, becoming a member of the same association in 1967. He showed a unique style of work that was in keeping with the Bunmei-Kaika style and Nanban exotic tastes. In 1949 (Showa 24), he received the 1st Tochigi Prefecture Cultural Merit Award. He also published many small woodblock prints from the beginning of the Showa era, including "Aohige" and "Egeresu Iroha."

版画家。横浜市生まれ。1916年(大正5)青山学院高等科を卒業し、翌年から1年余りカナダ、アラスカ、アメリカへ放浪の旅をする。21年から栃木県立宇都宮中学校の英語教師となり、このころから木版画家として活動を始めた。27年(昭和2)日本創作版画協会の会員となり、また国画会展にも出品し、42年には同会の会員となる。文明開化調や南蛮異国趣味に独特の作風を示した。49年(昭和24)第1回栃木県文化功労賞を受賞。また昭和初めから『青髯(あおひげ)』『えげれすいろは』ほか小形木版本を多数刊行した。
