Onigesi - Onigesi

Japanese: オニゲシ - おにげし
Onigesi - Onigesi

A perennial plant of the Papaveraceae (APG classification: Papaveraceae). It is native to the Mediterranean coast and Iran. The stem is 0.5 to 1 meter long, and the leaves begin at the base of the plant, have long stalks, are deeply pinnate, and the flower stalk emerges from the center and grows alternately on the stalk. The flower stalk is thick, and in May it blooms a large scarlet flower on a 10 to 15 cm stalk. The petals are 4 to 6, obovate, and black-spotted at the base. The leaves and stalks are covered with coarse hairs. The stem does not branch, and after flowering it goes into aestivation and the above-ground parts die, then grow again in autumn, and do not die in winter. It is good for flower beds and for cut flowers (fresh flowers and cuttings with fruit after the flowers have fallen). Recently, there are many horticultural varieties, such as varieties with larger flowers and flower colors such as vermilion, peach, orange, and white, and dwarf varieties that are resistant to lodging and have strong flower stalks. It is easy to grow, and in autumn, after the dormant plants have emerged, they are planted 30cm apart in a sunny location. They can also be laid flat (September to October) or grown from seeds (early spring).
