Born: November 22, 1867 in Troppau [Died] August 8, 1908, Düsseldorf Austrian modern architect and designer. Student of O. Wagner. One of the leaders of the Vienna Secession movement founded in 1897. Designed the Secession Building (1898-99) for the Vienna Secession Exhibition in 1900. Invited by Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse in 1899, he planned an artists' colony in Darmstadt, the capital of Hesse, and built the Ernst Ludwig House (1901), the Exhibition Hall (01-08), and the Marriage Monument of the Grand Duke of Hesse (01-08), among others. In 1908 he moved to Düsseldorf, where he built the Tietz department store (now the Kaufhof department store, 06), his final work. His own house, Feinhals (08-09), was designed in a classical style using Doric orders.
