The largest riot in British history occurred in London in 1780. It began when Lord George Gordon, angry at the partial repeal of discrimination against Catholics in 1778, approached the Protestant Union and organized a protest movement. On June 2, 1780, a crowd of nearly 60,000 responded to the Society's appeal and surrounded Parliament carrying petitions. Some of them turned into a mob, attacking Catholic churches, schools, and the homes and shops of wealthy Catholics. The Bank of England was also a target, and nearly 2,000 prisoners were released from the city's prisons. It took about a week to put down the riot, and 285 people were confirmed dead and 458 were arrested. 25 people were found responsible and executed. Lord Gordon was acquitted.
