The capital of the province of La Coruna in Galicia, northwest Spain. Population 231,721 (1981). It flourished as a port city, as evidenced by the establishment of a Roman lighthouse (the Tower of Hercules), and is still the northwesternmost trading and fishing port of Spain, serving as the base for domestic and ocean routes. Shipbuilding and fish processing industries are in operation. The town grew out of the Roman colony of Ardubicum Coronium, and in the 5th century it became the capital of the Suebi Kingdom. In 1588 the Spanish Armada set sail from here, and the town was destroyed the following year by artillery fire from the English fleet. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
