Born: May 12, 1802, in Lessis-sur-Ursus
Died November 21, 1861. Soreze. French priest and preacher. He started out as a lawyer, but was drawn to the writings of H. Ramnay, and entered the Sulpice Seminary in Paris in 1824, becoming a priest in 1827. In 1830, he joined the liberal magazine Futurity, led by Ramnay. After being expelled in 1832, he adopted a liberal tendency and preached at the pulpit of Notre Dame in 1835, achieving great success. In 1838, he joined the Dominican Order in Rome, and thereafter worked hard to reintroduce the order with the aim of re-educating France, serving as Superior of France from 1850 to 1854. He later founded an educational facility for the order in Soreze and worked to develop it, and was elected a member of the Academie in 1860. He pursued freedom based on Christianity, and had a major impact on the development of France's intellectual field.

フランスの聖職者，説教家。弁護士の道に入ったが，H.ラムネの著作にひかれ，1824年パリのシュルピス会神学校に入学，27年司祭。 30年ラムネの指導する自由主義的な雑誌『未来』に参加。 32年排斥されると 35年から自由主義的傾向を取入れてノートル・ダムの説教壇に立ち大成功を収めた。 38年ローマでドミニコ会に入り，以後フランスの再教化を目指して同会の再導入に尽力，50～54年フランス管区長。以後ソレーズで教育のための同会施設を創立してその発展に努め，60年アカデミー会員に選ばれた。キリスト教に立脚して自由を追求し，フランスの知的分野の展開に大きな影響を残した。
