A ballet term. From the Italian intrecciare (to interweave), it also means to leap about or dance wildly. It is a typical pas (step) in which the dancer jumps up, crosses both legs, and slams them together. Women often perform this step while being supported by a man. One crossing counts as two for both legs, and there are 2 to 10 entrechats. An odd number of times means landing on one foot. An entrechat deux (two entrechats) is also called a changement de pied, and the repeated crossing and uncrossing of the legs allows light to shine through the gaps between the legs, making it an important element of adding light and dark to the dance.
