Swiss sculptor. Born in Fribourg. Studied at the Basel School of Fine Arts from 1941 to 1945, and moved to Paris in 1952, where he has been active ever since. In 1957, he produced his first "Meta Mechaniques." These are works that attempt to visualize movement through moving devices made from machine parts, but because they are often made from a collection of junk, the movement lacks mechanical consistency. In 1960, he attracted attention with his self-destructive work "Homage to New York" in the square in front of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He became a member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement led by Pierre Restany (1930-2003), and in 1966, he collaborated with Niki de Saint Phalle to produce "Hon" (Swedish for "She"), a papier-mâché female statue for the Stockholm Museum of Art that one can walk through. He married Saint Phalle in 1971. In 1982, he collaborated with Saint Phalle on a fountain sculpture in the square next to the Pompidou Center in Paris. His moving mechanical works are exhibited at the Jean Tinguely Museum in Basel, Switzerland (established in 1996).
