A script used to write the Lao language, and in the narrow sense refers to the national script of Laos. Like Thai, it descends from the Sukhothai script and is descended from the Old Cambodian (Khmer) script. It has fewer characters than Thai (it lacks consonants that transcribe Indian loanwords), and its vowel notation is older. The first documents date back to the end of the 15th century. In a broader sense, it includes the Yuan script used in northern Thailand, which is a descendant of the Old Hmong script. The oldest documents date back to the second half of the 16th century. This variant of Tam is used exclusively for numbers and religious notation in both scripts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
