The ergodic hypothesis is a hypothesis that is the foundation of statistical mechanics. It states that in a system in thermal equilibrium, the thermodynamic observed value of a physical quantity is equal to the average value of the physical quantity for all dynamic states, and was originally proposed by L. Boltzmann. Attempts to prove this ergodic hypothesis are called ergodic theory. Let us take as an example a system (isolated system) that is confined within a wall and whose energy is conserved at a constant value E.
