Firefly Light - Firefly Light

A Scottish folk song. The original title is Auld lang syne (A long time ago), and the original lyrics were written by Scottish national poet Robert Burns. In 1881 (Meiji 14), it was included under the title "Hotaru" in the first volume of the "Elementary School Songs Collection" compiled by the Ministry of Education's Music Investigation Division, and has since become a widely loved song. The Japanese lyricist is unknown. The original lyrics had four verses, and were largely militaristic, about leaving everyone behind and setting off to the battlefield to protect the country, but today only the first verse, "Hotaru no hikari mado no yuki," and the second verse, "To stay or go, as far as you can," are sung, and it is loved and sung at graduation ceremonies and other events as a song of regret at parting.

スコットランド民謡による唱歌。原題はAuld lang syne（久しき昔）で、原曲の歌詞はスコットランドの国民的詩人ロバート・バーンズによって書かれた。1881年（明治14）文部省の音楽取調掛(とりしらべがかり)が編集した『小学唱歌集』初編に「蛍」の題名で収められ、その後広く愛唱されるようになった。日本語の作詞者は不詳。本来の歌詞は4節まであり、皆と別れて国を守るために戦地へ旅立つという、多分に軍国主義的な内容であったが、今日では「蛍の光窓の雪」に始まる第1節、「留まるも行くも限りとて」の第2節のみが歌われ、単に別れを惜しむ歌として卒業式などで歌われ、親しまれている。
