Lao people - Lao (English spelling)

Japanese: ラオ族 - ラオぞく（英語表記）Lao

One of the most important ethnic groups among the Thai peoples. They are of Mongoloid descent and live in Laos and northeastern Thailand. Lao is the official language of Laos. They mainly make a living by rice paddy farming. The existence of married couple families is prominent, and there is a lack of unilineal organizations such as clans. The marriage residence system is matrilocal marriage. The religion is Buddhism, and wats (temples) are the center of village life, but the traditional spirit worship of Phi is also widely practiced.

タイ諸族のなかの有力な一民族。形質的にはモンゴロイド系に属し，ラオスやタイ北東部に居住，ラオ語はラオスの公用語となっている。おもに水田農耕を生業としている。夫婦家族の存在が卓越し，氏族などの単系組織が欠如しており，婚姻居住方式では妻方居住婚がみられる。宗教は仏教で，ワット (寺) が村落生活の中心となっているが，旧来のピーという精霊崇拝も広くみられる。
