(1) In civil litigation, it refers to the statements and evidence presented by each of the opposing parties to assert the validity of their own claims or to reject the claims of the other party. Arguments are generally made orally, but written arguments are also possible. In the former case, argument is used synonymously with oral argument. (2) In criminal proceedings, first, it is used synonymously with trial proceedings; second, it means the questioning and statements of the parties; and third, it refers to the statement of opinions on facts and law, especially from the defendant's side, after the examination of evidence has been completed, and is used in response to the prosecution's closing argument.
