Wife's words - Nyobo kotoba
Also written as nyobo-kotoba. Words that began to be used by ladies-in-waiting in the Imperial Palace and the Sento Imperial Palace in the early Muromachi period. These words were then passed on to women who served the Ashikaga and Tokugawa shoguns, and were then used by women in ordinary samurai and townspeople alike. Examples include aomono (vegetables), kamoji (hair), sumoji (sushi), oden (dengaku), and ohiya (water).

女房詞とも書く。室町初期から御所や仙洞(せんとう)御所に仕える女房たちが使い始めた言葉。それが足利将軍や徳川将軍に仕える女性に伝わり,さらに一般の武家や町家の女性にも用いられるようになった。たとえば青物(野菜),かもじ(髪の毛),すもじ(すし),おでん(田楽),おひや(水)など。
