In 1560 (Eiroku 3), he succeeded his father Haruhisa's death as the governor of Izumo, and continued fighting against the Mori clan. In 1562, the Omori Silver Mine fell and the Mori forces invaded Izumo, leading to a succession of local lords defecting from the area. The following year, the subsidiary castle, Shiraka Castle, fell, leaving them isolated in Toda Castle. After three years of siege, they surrendered to the Mori clan in November 1566. He was imprisoned at Enmyoji Temple in Nagata, Aki together with his younger brothers Michihisa and Hidehisa, and later became a guest of the Mori clan.
