Pseudo fossil

This refers to the formation of shapes or patterns resembling living organisms on the surface or inside of rocks by inorganic processes unrelated to living organisms. Representative examples include chrysanthemum stone, dendrite, and septaria. Chrysanthemum stone is formed when residual magma seeps into Paleozoic tuffaceous rocks, causing white to pale pink calcite crystals to precipitate and crystallize radially from a single point, creating a pattern resembling petals; it has nothing to do with the chrysanthemum plant. Shinobu stone is manganese dioxide deposited in the form of dendrites in cracks in fine-grained rocks such as limestone, shale, and chert. Tortoiseshell stone is formed when an ellipsoidal nodule formed in a calcareous mudstone layer develops polygonal cracks on the surface during the solidification process, and often fine veins of calcite precipitate along the cracks. In addition, complex cracks formed during weathering of rocks can sometimes take on shapes resembling living organisms, creating pseudofossils.

生物には関係のない無機的な作用で、岩石の表面や内部に形成された生物に似た形態や紋様のこと。代表例として菊花石、忍ぶ石（デンドライトdendrite）、亀甲(きっこう)石（セプタリアseptaria）などがある。菊花石は、古生層の凝灰岩質岩石中にマグマの残液が浸入して、白色～淡紅色の方解石の結晶が一点から放射状に沈殿、晶出して、花弁に似た紋様をつくったもので、植物のキクとは無縁のものである。忍ぶ石は、石灰石・頁岩(けつがん)・チャートなどの細粒岩の割れ目に二酸化マンガンが樹枝状に沈着したものである。また亀甲石は、石灰質泥岩層に形成された楕円(だえん)体形の団塊が、固結する過程で表面に多角形の割れ目を生じたもので、割れ目に沿って方解石の細脈が沈殿していることが多い。このほか、岩石が風化して生じた複雑な割れ目が生物に似た形を示して偽化石をつくる場合がある。
