The capital of Lao Cai Province (population 595,000 in 1999) in northern Vietnam. It is located 255 km northwest of Hanoi, in the upper reaches of the Song Khoi River valley. It is close to the border with China, and is connected to Kunming in China by rail. It has a population of 15,364 (1989). 70% of the population are ethnic minorities. There is a phosphate mine of the same name nearby, and a phosphate fertilizer factory. The province also produces fruits such as peaches and apricots.
