American orientalist and anthropologist. Born in Cologne, Germany, he came to the United States in 1898. He led expeditions to various places, including the Amur River basin, China, Tibet, and Mongolia, and collected ethnological documents and materials. He was a man of great learning and well versed in Asian languages. His major works include "Considerations on Chinese Taoism" and "Sino-Iranianism."
