Shunkei lacquerware

Japanese:
Shunkei lacquerware

A type of lacquer technique in which the surface of the lacquerware base is dyed yellow or red and then coated with transparent lacquer. The purpose is to make the grain pattern of the wood visible through the lacquer film. Its origins date back to the Nara period with red lacquer, which was a technique in which the wood was dyed with sappan and then coated with transparent lacquer. One of the relics is the red lacquer design ayatsuki sushi cabinet in the Shosoin Repository. The name Shunkei-nuri comes from a lacquering technique invented by the lacquerer Shunkei of Sakai (Osaka Prefecture) during the Oan era (1368-1375), and this technique spread throughout the country as Sakai Shunkei. For this reason, some Shunkei are named after the place where they are grown, such as Hida Shunkei (Takayama city, Gifu prefecture), Noshiro Shunkei (Akita prefecture), Awano Shunkei (Ibaraki prefecture), Kiso Shunkei (Kiso town, Nagano prefecture), and Ise Shunkei (Mie prefecture). Today, only the names of Shunkei, Yoshino Shunkei, and Nikko Shunkei remain.

Shunkei lacquerware has subtle differences in color tone that are characteristic of each region, and is broadly divided into two types: yellow and red. Yellow Shunkei (colored with rosy yellow, gardenia, kihada, auramine, and thioflavin) and red Shunkei (colored with red iron, vermilion, crimson, scarlet, and fuchsin). Traditional methods use natural dyes, while modern products use chemical dyes.
