A commercial organization that sells seats to spectators at sumo shows and provides food, drinks, and souvenirs. It was an organization that emerged spontaneously from a gathering of sumo enthusiasts around 1789, but later became a commercial business performing the above services, and made a contract with the Sumo Kaisho (now the Sumo Association) and made it a hereditary family business. It had a monopoly on the sale of food and drinks in the sumo tent, but also paid the seating fees in full to the Kaisho, playing a role in stabilizing sumo show revenues. In September 1957, it was renamed the Sumo Service Company. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
