Inada Shigetane - Inada Shigetane

...Former name of the province. Awashu. Awaji Island in the southern part of present-day Hyogo Prefecture.
[Ancient times]
A lower province belonging to the Nankaido (Engishiki). In the Kojiki it is written as Awado, and in the Nihon Shoki it is written as Awaji. It probably means the road to Awa (Awa) Province. It is also an important location for transportation along the Seto Inland Sea. In the creation myths in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, most versions say that Awaji Island was created first. It also tells us that Emperor Hanzei was born in Awaji, that Wachitsumi no Mikoto, a native of Awaji, became the wife of Emperor Korei, that Awaji Miyake was established during the reign of Emperor Chuai, and that Emperors Richu and Ingyō hunted in Awaji.

　南海道に属する下国(《延喜式》)。《古事記》は淡道，《日本書紀》は淡路と書く。阿波(粟)国へ行く道の意味であろう。瀬戸内海交通上の要地でもある。記紀の国生み神話では，ほとんどの所伝が第一に淡路島が生まれたとする。また反正天皇が淡路で生まれたこと，淡路出身の和知都美（わちつみ）命の女が孝霊天皇の妃となったこと，仲哀天皇のとき淡路屯倉（みやけ）を定めたこと，履中，允恭両天皇が淡路で狩りをしたことなどが見える。…
