Born: February 6, 1834, Königsberg Died October 23, 1913. German bacteriologist and pathologist from Bern. Known for his research into bacterial infections. In 1861, he became assistant to R. Virchow at the Institute of Pathology in Berlin, and after serving as professor at the universities of Bern, Würzburg, Prague, and Zurich, he traveled to the United States, where he became professor at Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1896, returning to Japan in 1900. In 1873, he succeeded in inducing tuberculosis in cows by feeding them contaminated milk, and in 1878, he succeeded in infecting monkeys with syphilis. In 1883, he discovered the diphtheria bacillus.
