A riot by miners broke out at the Ashio Copper Mine in February 1907 (Meiji 40). It is often referred to as the Ashio Copper Mine Riot. It began with a clash between miners and site staff at the Tsudo mine watchtower on the 4th of that month, which is strongly suspected to have been provoked by the boarding house chief. At the time in Ashio, the Ashio branch of the Dai-Nippon Rodo Shiseikai (founded in October 1906), led by Nagaoka Tsuruzo and Minami Sukematsu, was organizing a campaign for higher wages and had also joined forces with the Tomoko Alliance to work to limit exploitation among the boarding house chiefs. In order to destroy the Shiseikai, the boarding house chiefs bribed their subordinate miners to cause a riot. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
