Small drum - Kotsuzumi

Japanese:
Small drum - Kotsuzumi
A Japanese string-fastened membranous instrument. The body is 25-26 cm long and made of high-quality cherry wood. At both ends of the body are attached iron rings about 20 cm in diameter, with horsehide sewn with thread. The membrane is fastened with hemp string called tateshirabe, and then wrapped with yokoshirabe. The tension on the skin surface is adjusted by manipulating this. Generally, the player sits upright and holds the shirabe in his left hand, places the instrument on his right shoulder, and plays by striking the skin surface with the fingertips of his right hand. In Noh, the player sits on a stool. The kotsuzumi is an instrument that descends from the ikko (a single drum), and was perfected as a component instrument of the four-beat Nohgaku. Thus, four schools were born: the Kanze school, the Koryu school, the Kosei school, and the Okura school. With the development of Kabuki, the heads of schools such as Tanaka, Rokugo, Mochizuki, Fukuhara, Kashiwa, and Katada were born and competed with each other in their techniques from the late Edo period onwards.
