Gunung Lawu (mountain) (English spelling)

Japanese: ラウー[山]（英語表記）Gunung Lawu

A volcano towering over central Java, Indonesia. Its beautiful cone-shaped form stands east of the ancient city of Surakarta. It erupted in the early 20th century, but is currently dormant. Its base is roughly circular and spreads over a vast area with a radius of about 35 km, and its foothills are fertile fields. Bengawan Solo (the Solo River) originates at the southern foot of the mountain and flows around the foothills to the west and north. There are ruins of Hindu culture at the summit, and Candi Sukuh (built in the 15th century) is known to be located halfway up the mountain.

インドネシア，ジャワ島中部にそびえる火山。標高3265m。古都スラカルタの東方にコニーデ型の美しい姿を示す。20世紀初めに爆発したことがあるが，現在は活動を休止している。すそ野は半径約35kmで，ほぼ円形に広大な面積にわたって広がり，山麓は沃野となっている。ブンガワン･ソロ(ソロ川)は南麓に発源し，西および北のふもとをめぐって流れる。頂上にヒンドゥー文化の遺跡があり，中腹のチャンディ･スクー(15世紀建)が知られる。
