It is an annual plant of the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico. It grows to a height of 1-1.2m, slightly smaller than cosmos. Its pinnate compound leaves are opposite, with wider lobes than cosmos. The flower heads are 4-6cm in diameter and grow at the top of the stem. Flower colors range from pale yellow to orange and scarlet, and there are single and double-flowered varieties. It has a long flowering period, blooming from early summer until frost. It is generally planted in the ground, but there are also dwarf varieties with a height of around 30cm, which are also used for container cultivation. It prefers a sunny and well-drained environment. It is very hardy, grows well in poor soil, and germinates well from scattered seeds, so it can become semi-wild.
