Translated as "indicative motive." A musical motive (fragmentary melody) that expresses or symbolizes a person, thing, situation, idea, or concept in Richard Wagner's music dramas and program music. Wagner's friend and editor-in-chief of the magazine Bayreuth, H. von Wolzogen (1848-1938), used it in his essay on the Ring of the Nibelung (1876), and Wagner himself called it the "Grundthema" or "Ahnungsmotiv." This is a development of Berlioz's "fixed musical idea," and has been used since Wagner in operas by Richard Strauss and others, as well as in symphonic poems. A similar technique is also found in early modern Japanese performance arts such as kabuki. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
