Located in central Gunma Prefecture, this area stretches from the southern slope of Mount Akagi to the central-northern part of Maebashi City, with Mount Uzurayama at an elevation of 620m as its highest point. Originally a common area for towns and villages at the foot of the mountain, it was sold to private individuals by the Imperial Forestry Bureau in 1925, and settlers began reclamation. Further development took place after World War II, but due to the thick layer of volcanic ash and the high rate of groundwater seepage, the settlements are scattered. Nearby are the National Akagi Youth House and the Gunma Prefectural Livestock Experiment Station.
