… In this period, the study of waka poetry flourished, and the words of ancient poems were studied, leading to the creation of many treatises on waka poetry. Among these, the one-volume Nōin Utamakura by Nōin Hōshi, the three-volume Kigo Shō by Fujiwara Nakazane, the three-volume Ougi Shō by Fujiwara Kiyosuke (written around the Tenji to Tenyō period (1124-45)), the twenty-volume Shuchū Shō by Akiaki (written around the Bunji period (1185-90)), and the ten-volume Waka Doumō Shō by Fujiwara Norikane (written between 1135 and 1155 (Hōen 1 and Kuju 2)) contain sections that collect and classify the meanings of waka words and add interpretations to them.

Many new dictionaries were compiled under the influence of the Heian period dictionaries.
