The ancestors of the Western Slavs. In Latin, they are written as Veneti or Venedi. There are many place names in Europe that contain the roots Wen or Win (such as Vienna's old name Vindobona and Venetia in Italy), so it is believed that people with this name lived widely. It is likely that the Illyrian Veneti, who lived along the Baltic coast in the 2nd millennium BC, moved south into Italy, and then the Slavs who migrated to the Baltic coast were called Veneti or Venedi by the surrounding peoples, taking the names of the indigenous peoples.
