Escapement

Japanese: 脱進機 - だっしんき

A device that applies intermittent force to a balance or pendulum to keep them oscillating. It rotates a gear one tooth at a time at regular intervals, and maintains the correct rate of a mechanical clock. The escape wheel at the end of the power transmission gear train has a specially angled tooth that meshes with two pawls on the anchor alternately on the left and right, transmitting the force from the escape wheel to the balance or pendulum. Early clocks used a verge escapement that combined a crown wheel and a foliot balance, but as clock technology developed, various escapements such as the recoil escapement and lever escapement were devised.

てんぷまたは振子などの振動を持続させるために，それらに間欠的な力を与える装置。一定時間間隔で歯車を１歯ずつ回転させる装置で，機械時計の正しい歩度を維持する。動力伝達輪列の最後にあるがんぎ車の，特殊な角度をもつ歯先と，アンクルの二つ爪(つめ)が左右交互にかみ合い，がんぎ車からの力がてんぷや振子に伝達される。初期の時計では冠型がんぎ車と棒てんぷを組み合わせたバージ脱進機が用いられ，時計技術の発達とともに，退却型脱進機やレバー脱進機などさまざまなものが考案された。
