Raichūr (English spelling)

A town in the northeastern part of Karnataka state, southwest India. It is the administrative capital of Raichur district. It is located about 173 km southwest of Hyderabad, on a plateau between the Krishna River and its tributary, the Tungabhadra River, at an altitude of 410 m. It is the commercial and industrial center of the cotton-growing region, and cotton processing is a major industry. Other industries include oil extraction and soap manufacturing. It has a history dating back to the 13th century, and a castle and palace remain on the hill. There is a college of Karnataka University in the town. Population 157,477 (1991). インド南西部，カルナータカ州北東部の町。ライチュール県の行政庁所在地。ハイデラバード南西約 173km，クリシュナ川と，その支流トゥンガバドラ川にはさまれた高原上，標高 410mに位置。綿花栽培地帯の商工業中心地で，綿花加工が盛ん。ほかに搾油，石鹸製造が行われる。 13世紀からの歴史をもち，丘の上に城や宮殿が残る。カルナータカ大学のカレッジがある。人口 15万 7477 (1991) 。
