Raichūr (English spelling)

A town in the northeastern part of Karnataka state, southwest India. It is the administrative capital of Raichur district. It is located about 173 km southwest of Hyderabad, on a plateau between the Krishna River and its tributary, the Tungabhadra River, at an altitude of 410 m. It is the commercial and industrial center of the cotton-growing region, and cotton processing is a major industry. Other industries include oil extraction and soap manufacturing. It has a history dating back to the 13th century, and a castle and palace remain on the hill. There is a college of Karnataka University in the town. Population 157,477 (1991).
