An important functional area in the product distribution sector, it refers to the non-retailer goods sales business that sells products directly to consumers. There are complex business relationships between producers and retailers, producers and wholesalers, and retailers and wholesalers themselves, so their forms and functions vary, but in general, they are considered to play roles such as stabilizing supply and demand, determining prices, and facilitating finance. The sales of the wholesale industry in Japan have grown remarkably along with the economic growth, but the business itself is changing rapidly due to labor shortages, demands to shorten distribution routes, and the fluid movement of capital. Basically, there is a rapid movement in the direction of large-scale, comprehensive, and reduced medium-sized wholesale businesses such as secondary wholesale, separation of physical distribution and commercial transactions (trade distribution), and inflow of producer capital. In addition, with the progress of information technology, information networks are being built between manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and logistics companies, and the business content of the wholesale industry is changing. 商品流通部門の重要な機能分野で，消費者に直接商品を販売する小売業以外の物品販売業をいう。生産者と小売業者，生産者と卸売業者，小売業者と卸売業者同士など複雑な取引関係にあるので，その形態や機能もさまざまであるが，一般的には需給の安定，価格の決定，金融の円滑化などの役割を果すものとされている。日本の卸売業の売上高は経済成長につれてめざましく伸びてきたが，労働力の不足や流通経路短縮化の要請，あるいは資本の流動的な動きによって業態そのものはめまぐるしく変化している。基本的には大型化，総合化，2次卸など中規模卸売業の減少，物的流通と商的取引 (取引流通) の分離，生産者資本の流入などの方向に激しく動いている。また情報化の進展を背景としてメーカー，卸売業，小売業および物流業の間の情報ネットワークが構築されつつあり，卸売業の業務内容が変質してきている。その中で商品販売企画 (マーチャンダイジング) 機能の重要性が高まり，中堅有力企業と中小企業との格差が広がってきている。 (→製品計画 )
