Toshiko Tamura

[Died] April 16, 1945. Shanghai, China. Novelist. Real name: Sato Toshi. Dropped out of the Japanese Literature Department at Japan Women's University due to illness. Studied under Koda Rohan and married fellow student Tamura Shogyo. At one time she aspired to be an actress, but her novel Akiramen (1911) won first place in a novel contest run by the Osaka Asahi Shimbun newspaper, and she entered the literary world. She wrote novels such as Oath (12), Mockery (12), Prostitute (13, later renamed Female Author), Mummy's Lipstick (13), and Pressure (15), depicting the conflict of self-consciousness through intense sensual descriptions, and became a popular author at the forefront of the industry. However, her life fell apart due to her extravagant spending habits, and she followed her lover to Canada (18), where she lived for 18 years. In 1936, she returned to Japan and tried to make a comeback, but was unsuccessful. She then went to China to work on the publication of the magazine "Josei" but died there. In 1960, the Toshiko Tamura Award was established to honor the works and activities of women writers.

小説家。本名，佐藤とし。日本女子大学国文科を病気中退。幸田露伴に師事し，同門の田村松魚と結婚。一時期女優を志したが，『大阪朝日新聞』の懸賞小説に長編『あきらめ』 (1911) が1等当選して文壇に登場。『誓言』 (12) ，『嘲弄』 (12) ，『遊女』 (13，のち『女作者』と改題) ，『木乃伊 (ミイラ) の口紅』 (13) ，『圧迫』 (15) など強烈な官能描写を通じて自意識の相克を描き，第一線の流行作家となった。しかし生活面では浪費癖のため破綻をきたし，愛人のあとを追ってカナダへ脱出 (18) ，18年間在住した。 1936年帰国，再起を試みたが成功せず，中国に渡り雑誌『女声』発行に従事したが客死した。 60年女流文学者の作品，活動に授与される田村俊子賞が設けられた。
