...After the slave trade declined in the 19th century, the country's economy was based on the production and export of palm oil, and it continued to prosper until it was defeated by the French army in 1894. The name of King Ghezo (Guézo) (reigned 1818-58), who flourished at the height of his power based on a strong centralized political organization, became known in Europe along with the women's army called the Amazons that he organized. By the end of the 19th century, the region had been almost completely conquered by the French army, and in 1904 it was incorporated into French West Africa, with the government-general's headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. ...
