A method of depositing a nonmetallic conversion coating on a metal surface by chemical or electrochemical treatment. Coating compounds include phosphates, chromates, basic salts, oxides, and sulfides, and are used for undercoating, lubrication for plastic processing, improving corrosion resistance, and chemical coloring of surfaces. Phosphating of steel, commonly known as Parkerizing or Bonderizing under registered trademarks, is a treatment method in which minute crystals of zinc phosphate or iron phosphate are deposited on the surface to form a coating.
