Palmyra

Japanese: パルミュラ
Palmyra
An ancient city in central Syria. Under Roman rule, it enjoyed broad autonomy and prospered as a base for caravans from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD. It once controlled Syria and Mesopotamia, but rebelled against Rome and was destroyed in 273. The Great Temple of Baal, a triumphal arch, a tower-shaped tomb, and Oriental-style sculptures have been discovered in the ruins, and it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1980. A Japanese research team has also been investigating the underground tombs since the 1990s.
