Japanese: 雲岡石窟 - うんこうせっくつ

A rock-cut temple located about 20km west of Datong City, Shanxi Province, China. There are 42 rock-cut caves. The first five caves were carved in 460 by the monk Tanyao during the reign of Emperor Wencheng of the Northern Wei Dynasty, who was an ardent Buddhist worshipper. The sandstone sculptures have a unique style influenced by the Gandharan and Mathura art styles. From around the Taihe period (477-499), the temple became increasingly Sinicized, and the simplicity of the early period was replaced by a refined and gorgeous style. The temple continued to be built after the capital was moved to Luoyang in 493, but the style became fixed. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2001.

中国，山西省大同市の西約20kmにある石窟寺院。石窟数は42。熱心な仏教崇拝者だった北魏の文成帝時代に僧曇曜によって460年最初の５洞が彫られた。砂岩に彫られた彫像はガンダーラ様式，マトゥラー美術の影響を受けながら独特の様式をもっている。太和年間（477年―499年）ころから中国化はますます強まり，初期の素朴さとは変わって洗練された華麗さをみせる。493年の洛陽遷都以後も続けられたが，形式は固定化をたどった。2001年，世界文化遺産に登録。
