〘名〙① ある場所に石を置くこと。また、その石。とくに、線路に置かれた石をいうことが多い。② 風致をよくするために、庭などに配置した石。※妻（1908‐09）〈田山花袋〉一三「置石の処々に伽羅(きゃら)と丸ヒバの大きいのが綺麗に刈込まれてある」③ 軒下に雨だれを受けて流すために置いた敷石。砌(みぎり)の石。※花営三代記‐応永三一年（1424）正月一日「畠山中務少輔持清直垂にて於_二置石_一参会」④ 囲碁で、弱いほうの人があらかじめ二目以上星に置くこと。また、その石。⑤ 中世、関税の一つ。鎌倉後期、朝廷が摂津尼崎・渡辺等の港に寄港する船舶から、港湾の修理料に充てるため徴集したのがはじまり。
