Five Books of Moses

Five Books of Moses

A general name for the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. From the Jewish perspective, it is the part called Torah (Law), and it has a particularly important position in the Bible as a whole. It is sometimes simply called the Pentateuch, but that name follows the Greek word pentatoikos (meaning five books). In terms of content, it is a magnificent piece of historical literature that covers the period from the creation of the world to the death of Moses, and has been transmitted through four traditional materials in a variety of styles, including myths, legends, stories, poetry, and law, and has been compiled into its present-day form through several editing stages. The issue of material criticism regarding the transmission history of the Pentateuch is one of the most interesting areas of Old Testament studies.
