Yoyogi

Located in the northern part of Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, this area is centered around Meiji Shrine. The neighborhoods with the name "Yoyogi" include Yoyogi 1-5-chome, Motoyoyogi-cho, and Yoyogi-Kamizono-cho. Adjacent to the south is Jinnan, where the National Yoyogi Stadium and NHK Broadcasting Center are located. Jingu Naien was the site of the lower residence of the Ii family, the lords of Hikone Domain, during the Edo period, and it is said that the place name comes from the fact that there was an old fir tree (Yoyogi) on the premises. A monument to this tree still stands within the grounds. Meiji Shrine was completed in 1920 (Taisho 9), and is loved by the citizens of Tokyo as a guardian deity. The former Yoyogi Parade Ground was transformed into the US military barracks Washington Heights, the Tokyo Olympics athletes' village, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Yoyogi Park. There are JR Yoyogi Station and Harajuku Station, and the Odakyu Electric Railway Odawara Line, Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, and Toei Subway Oedo Line pass through the area.

東京都渋谷区北部、明治神宮を中心とする地区。代々木のつく町名に代々木1～5丁目、元代々木町、代々木神園(かみぞの)町がある。南に隣接して、国立代々木競技場、NHK放送センターのある神南(じんなん)がある。神宮内苑(ないえん)は江戸時代には彦根(ひこね)藩主井伊家の下屋敷地で、その邸内にモミの老木（代々木）があったことが地名の由来という。いまも境内にその碑がある。明治神宮は1920年（大正9）完成、都民の鎮守として親しまれている。旧代々木練兵場跡は、アメリカ軍の宿舎ワシントンハイツを経て東京オリンピックの選手村から都立代々木公園へとかわった。JR代々木駅・原宿駅があり、さらに小田急電鉄小田原線、東京地下鉄千代田線、都営地下鉄大江戸線が通じている。
