Geologically, it corresponds to a new sedimentary basin since the Mesozoic era, surrounded by granitic rocks formed by the Hercynian orogeny and exposed areas of Palaeozoic strata. It is surrounded by the Vosges Mountains and the Ardennes Plateau to the east, the Massif Central to the south, and the Armorican Mountains to the west, and is connected to the London Basin across the Straits of Dover to the north. It is the largest sedimentary basin in Western Europe, stretching approximately 480 km from east to west and north to south.
