Geologically, it corresponds to a new sedimentary basin since the Mesozoic era, surrounded by granitic rocks formed by the Hercynian orogeny and exposed areas of Palaeozoic strata. It is surrounded by the Vosges Mountains and the Ardennes Plateau to the east, the Massif Central to the south, and the Armorican Mountains to the west, and is connected to the London Basin across the Straits of Dover to the north. It is the largest sedimentary basin in Western Europe, stretching approximately 480 km from east to west and north to south. As sandstone and limestone piled up one after another on the shallow seabed and subsidence continued around Paris, a concentric geological structure is seen in which newer geological strata are gradually exposed from the outside of the basin toward the center. …

…パリを中心とするフランス中北部の大盆地。地質的には，ヘルシニアン造山運動でつくられたカコウ岩類や，古生層の露出地域に囲まれた，中生代以降の新しい堆積盆地に相当する。東をボージュ山地とアルデンヌ高原，南をマシフ･サントラル，西をアルモリカン山地に囲まれ，北はドーバー海峡を隔ててロンドン盆地に連なっている。東西，南北それぞれほぼ480kmに及ぶ，西ヨーロッパ最大の堆積盆地である。浅い海底に砂岩や石灰岩などが次々と積み重なるとともに，パリ付近を中心とした沈降が続いた結果，盆地の外側から中心部に向かって，しだいに新しい地質時代の地層が露出する同心円状の地質構造がみられる。…
