Year of death: 1467.5.31 (Onin 1.4.28)
Year of birth: 1409
A Confucian scholar from the Muromachi period. The founder of the revival of Confucianism in the Kiyohara family. Son of Sogyo and grandson of Ryoken. His pen name was Kansuken. His original name was Yoshinobu. He initially served Prince Yoshiyoshi of the Southern Court and was appointed as a vassal of the Suijo. In 1427, he moved to Tsushima in Owari, and briefly lived in Yoshino. Later, he returned to Kyoto and served as a tutor to Emperor Gohanazono. All the scholars in the country looked to Yoshitada as their teacher, and it was said that the Kiyohara school flourished. He was appointed Daizen-no-daifu and Oino-no-kami, and was appointed Myotsu-no-hakase, and was allowed to enter the palace. He was then promoted to Junior Fourth Rank Upper and appointed as a direct lecturer and dai-gaiki. In 1449, he was appointed as a junior councilor, and in June 1455, breaking with family tradition, he was promoted to Junior Third Rank and allowed to enter the palace while he was still alive. In 1457, he was appointed Minister of Finance, and in the following year, he was awarded the rank of Shosanmi, but took this opportunity to shave his head. His posthumous Buddhist name was Tsunetada. According to Ten'in's lecture on the Analects of Confucius, his style of learning was to incorporate new commentaries by Zhu Xi into the ancient commentaries.
