Plural of the Hebrew cherub. A superhuman being with a human or animal face and wings in the Old Testament. They were believed to guard God's throne and holy places, and golden cherubim were placed on the Ark of the Covenant. They are thought to have been adopted from the cherubs (chelabs) that guarded Assyrian temples and had a human face, a bull's body, a lion's tail, and wings. In Christianity (especially Catholicism), they are translated as cherubim and considered one of the angels. In art, they are depicted as infants with only the head and wings.
